- September
Well,
it’s hard to believe that summer is almost over. Every Labor Day Weekend
since I was a very little boy, I would watch as much of the Jerry
Lewis Telethon as I could stay up for. And when it was over, to me,
it was fall. This is a very different year for Shirley and me. For
the first time in 13 years, our son did not go back to school this
fall. He graduated in May and we are all figuring out what the future
holds (yes, mom and dad, too.)
I think a lot these days about how time truly does fly. The older
I get, the faster it gets. When your child becomes and adult, it
makes you think about things differently than you have for a long
time. I was 19 when we got married and we had Michael when I was
21. So this young man has been the center piece of our lives literally
since I was a kid. I watch him with pride when I see his talent,
his spirit, his love for the Lord and his calling in action. When
he leads worship in front of a group of 1000 kids at a youth conference
or plays drums for the incredible little band they have, I’m amazed
at what the Lord has done in his short life and can only imagine
what God has in store for him. His mom and I are his biggest fans,
of course, but God is using him already and we know his future is
bright.
I’m 39 and I remember the time span between September and Christmas
seeming like forever when I was Michael’s age. Today, it’s not nearly
long enough. But I’m learning that it doesn’t matter what age we’re
facing, whether it’s 18 or (Lord help me, do I even say it?!!) 40………..,
tomorrow is a new day with new challenges and new experiences. I
don’t worry about those like I did in my 20’s because I know the
Lord better now than I did then. I think about the incredible love
I feel for my son and it’s hard to comprehend that God could love
me more than that but He does. Being a dad has been the greatest
joy I have ever known, but I’m glad that when I need to be, I’m
just His child. I really am enjoying the journey now more than ever.
I hope you are, too. If you’re not, today’s the day to start. Til
next month, enjoy this one!
