When
I was 11 years old, getting ready to start the 6th grade, I remember
feeling like I was about to be a grown up. After all, in those days
the 6th grade was where the oldest kids in elementary school were.
We were the seniors, so to speak. It was about this time of year.
As I’ve told you before, the Jerry Lewis Labor Day MDA Telethon
meant fall to me and that year was special. If I wasn’t a grown
up, I was at least one of the “big kids.” It’s amazing how quickly
your perspective changes. Just one year later I was the littlest
kid in junior high and life was very different.
I
guess it’s no different whatever your age, perspective is everything.
A good friend once told me that perception is that person’s reality.
And I believe there is a lot of truth in that. I’ve been spending
a lot of time recently trying to view my life from God’s perspective.
What is His perception of me? That truly is reality. The bible lets
me know that God views me as victorious, head and not the tail—above
and not beneath. He sees someone with a bright future no matter
what age I am because He always has a plan for me. It is only a
matter of whether or not I choose to walk in it.
Last
month I was privileged to do a couple of dates out west. It is amazing
how culturally diverse we can be and yet strikingly similar in our
need for the Lord. I watched people respond to the move of the Holy
Spirit and watched God do what only he can. I’m always amazed at
that and humbled at the same time. If I tried to tell you how thankful
I am that the Lord uses me at all I would come up far short. I get
to do things now that I wouldn’t have even imagined 10 years ago
and sometimes I forget to even say, “Thank You, Lord.” I spend quite
a bit of time asking forgiveness for that very thing. He’s a great
teacher and I’m a slow learner. That’s the perspective I’m looking
from today. God is so good. My pastor always says, “He’s the great
I am and I am the great am not.” That’s another great perspective.
If
you’ve been having difficulty lately with your perspective, try
looking from God’s. It is way better. I’m 40 this year and feel
more like a kid than I did in the 6th grade. I guess that’s part
of God’s perspective. He’s my Father. I’m His son. I can trust Him
with my life. Lord, help me do just that.
Blessings,
John
